How to Clip YouTube Videos Into Shorts Automatically
October 31, 2026

To clip YouTube videos into Shorts automatically, paste the video link into an AI clipper that picks the best moments, reframes them to 9:16 and adds captions. Or let an agent watch the channel and do it for every new upload.

We make LumiClip, so weigh our view accordingly; we point out where a free or different option is the better fit.
This guide covers both ways to do it. The first is the paste-a-link workflow, where you start each video yourself and review the clips. The second is the fully automatic channel-watch option, where nothing needs clicking after setup. We also cover the copyright rules you need to follow before clipping anyone else's videos, because that is where most clip channels get into trouble.
Can you clip YouTube videos into Shorts automatically?
Yes. An AI clipper can turn one YouTube video into several captioned vertical Shorts from just a link, in one pass. You paste the URL, the tool transcribes the video, scores every segment, cuts the strongest moments into short clips, reframes them from 16:9 to 9:16 and burns in captions. For full automation, a channel-watching agent like LumiClip's detects new uploads and posts the clips for you.
The main thing to understand is the difference between the two levels of automation:
- Paste-a-link (semi-automatic): you start each video, then review, edit and post or schedule the clips. Best when you want control over every clip.
- Channel-watch (fully automatic): you set it up once. Every new upload on the channels you choose is clipped and published, or saved as drafts, without you opening the app.
What do you need before you start?
You need a long-form YouTube video (or a channel that uploads them), the right to clip it, and a clipper that accepts YouTube links. For auto-posting you also need the TikTok, Instagram or YouTube accounts you want to publish to. Get these sorted first:
- A source with real moments. Podcasts, interviews, talks, tutorials and streams work best. Videos under about 5 minutes rarely contain a standalone clip.
- Permission to clip. Your own videos are fine. For anyone else's, see the copyright section below before you do anything.
- A clipper that imports links. On LumiClip's pricing page, "Import from YouTube, TikTok & more" is listed on the Starter and Pro plans (as of October 2026). The Free plan lists file uploads up to 1 hour, so on Free you can download your own video from YouTube Studio and upload the file instead.
- Your branding: logo, caption style and colours, saved once as a template so every Short looks like yours.
How to turn a YouTube video into Shorts with a link
The paste-a-link workflow takes a few minutes of your time per video: paste, wait while the AI processes it, review, then post. Here is how it works in LumiClip, an AI video clipper that turns long videos into short vertical clips for TikTok, Reels and YouTube Shorts. The same steps apply in most link-based clippers.
Step 1: Copy the YouTube URL
Open the video on YouTube and copy the address from the browser bar or the Share button. Any public YouTube link works in LumiClip, whether it is a long-form video, podcast episode, vlog or conference talk, and you don't need to download or re-upload the file.
Step 2: Paste it into the clipper
Paste the link into the YouTube to Shorts tool and start the job. LumiClip pulls in the full video and queues it for clipping in seconds. Each minute of source video uses one credit, so a 45-minute episode costs 45 credits.
Step 3: Let the AI pick and score the moments
The AI scores every segment on hook strength, speech clarity, visual variety and emotional peaks, then ranks the candidate clips. You see each clip with its score, so you can start with the strongest ones. On paid plans, the pricing page says you get 2-3x more clips per video.
Step 4: Check the vertical framing and captions
Every clip is already reframed to 9:16, with speaker tracking that keeps whoever is talking centred, even when there are two hosts. Captions are word-level and animated, in 30+ languages with automatic detection. Open any clip in the editor to retrim it, fix a misheard name in the transcript, adjust caption timing, swap the B-roll or change the crop. To pick a caption style that stays readable, see our guide on how to add animated captions to short videos. If your source has tricky framing, our guide on converting horizontal video to vertical covers the options.
Step 5: Publish or schedule the Shorts
Connect your YouTube channel once and publish finished Shorts straight to it, or schedule them. You can also post the same clips to TikTok, Instagram Reels and LinkedIn, or download MP4s. Starter includes 6 connected social accounts, 100 posts a month and the auto-scheduler. Pro raises that to 20 accounts and unlimited posts.
Keep each clip within YouTube's length limit. Shorts can now be up to 3 minutes long, according to YouTube Help, but most clips that work are well under that.
How do you make YouTube Shorts fully automatically?
For hands-off Shorts, use a channel-watching agent: add the channels, connect your accounts and pick a template, and it clips and posts every new upload. In LumiClip, the YouTube automation agent watches up to 10 channels, picks the top 3 clips from each new video and publishes them on a stagger to TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook and LinkedIn.
- Step 1: Run one video by hand first. The agent uses the same ranker as the manual flow, so a manual test shows you what it will pick.
- Step 2: Add the channels. Paste up to 10 YouTube handles or channel URLs into one workflow, whether that is your own channel, a co-host's or a creator who has given you permission.
- Step 3: Connect socials and pick a brand template. If you have no template yet, the agent creates a default one with bold captions and an AI hook.
- Step 4: Choose schedule or drafts mode. Schedule mode posts automatically. Drafts mode clips and brands everything but leaves the clips in the Posts tab for you to review. Start in drafts for the first week.
After setup, the agent checks each channel every two hours through the YouTube Data API. It posts the first clip one hour after detecting an upload, then one every two hours per account, and emails you a recap when clips are scheduled. What are the limits of automatic clipping?
Channel-watch automation only handles new long-form uploads between 5 minutes and 4 hours, and it ships exactly three clips per video. Those rules keep credit use predictable, but they mean some videos still need the paste-a-link workflow. These limits come from the LumiClip automation agent page (checked 31 October 2026):
- No backfill: only uploads after setup are clipped. For your back catalogue, paste the old links one by one; our guide on how to repurpose old YouTube videos into Shorts covers picking evergreen videos and a 30-day posting plan.
- Length range: Shorts under 5 minutes and anything over 4 hours are skipped. Live streams are deferred until YouTube lists them as a normal video.
- Daily caps: at most 3 videos per workflow and 5 per user per day.
- Credits: you need at least 100 credits a month for the watcher to run. After three videos in a row are skipped for low credits, the workflow pauses and emails you.
- Plan: the automation agent is part of Pro.
Which option should you choose?
Use paste-a-link if you clip a few videos a month, want to pick every clip, or are working through old videos. Use channel-watch if a channel uploads every week and you want Shorts out without touching the app. Many creators use both: the agent for new uploads, and the manual clipper for anything special.
- Free option: for your own videos, the YouTube mobile app has a "Remix, Edit into a Short" option that turns part of a video into a Short. It's manual and does one Short at a time, but it costs nothing.
- Paste-a-link on LumiClip: Starter costs $9.99/month and includes 360 credits a month, about 6 hours of video (as of October 2026, per the LumiClip pricing page).
- Channel-watch on LumiClip: Pro costs $24.99/month and includes 1,200 credits a month, about 20 hours of video, plus the automation agent. Paying yearly halves both prices.
- Other tools: other AI clippers such as OpusClip, Vizard and Klap also accept YouTube links. Some are stronger on very long sources or caption styling. Our cheapest AI video clipper without a watermark comparison covers prices.
Can you legally clip other people's YouTube videos into Shorts?
Only with permission or a clear fair-use case. Automation does not change copyright, and channel-watching makes it easy to repost someone's work at scale. Clip your own videos freely. For anyone else's, get written permission, join an official clipping program, or add real commentary, and credit the creator on every clip.
What YouTube's own policies say:
- Copyright: YouTube's copyright overview lists the safe options as permission, a copyright exception such as fair use, or a Creative Commons licence. It also notes that YouTube removes content when it receives a valid copyright removal request.
- Fair use is narrow: YouTube's fair use guide says it depends on purpose, the nature of the work, how much you use and the market effect. It also says that giving credit to the owner won't, by itself, turn a straight copy into fair use.
- Monetisation: YouTube's channel monetization policies include a reused content policy that reviews clips and compilations. Clipping without adding value can keep a channel out of the YouTube Partner Program.
A safe rule: if the creator hasn't said yes, don't put their channel into an auto-posting workflow. Use drafts mode for any channel that isn't yours, so a person checks every clip before it goes out.
FAQ
Is there a free way to turn YouTube videos into Shorts automatically?
Not fully. LumiClip's free plan gives you 60 one-time credits (1 hour of video) with 720p watermarked exports and no social posting. YouTube's own "Edit into a Short" option is free, but manual.
How many Shorts can one YouTube video make?
It depends on the video. A 1-hour podcast usually has more standalone moments than a 10-minute vlog. In manual mode you choose from all the ranked clips. The automation agent always publishes exactly three per upload.
Do I need to download the YouTube video first?
No. On plans with YouTube import, you paste the link and LumiClip fetches the video. On the Free plan, upload the file instead.
Can I review clips before they are posted?
Yes. In the paste-a-link workflow nothing posts until you publish or schedule it. In the automation agent, switch to drafts mode and clips wait in the Posts tab for review.
Will automatic clipping pick up old videos on a channel?
No. The channel watcher only clips uploads that go live after you set it up. Paste older links into the manual clipper.
How long should a YouTube Short be?
YouTube allows Shorts of up to 3 minutes. There's no single right length: aim for one complete idea, with the hook in the first few seconds.
The fastest way to start
Start by pasting one of your own YouTube videos into a clipper and judging the clips it picks; if they're good, automate the channel. That order keeps you in control and tells you whether the AI's picks match your audience before anything posts on autopilot.
Try it on one video with LumiClip, then compare plans on the pricing page when you're ready to set up the channel auto-clipping agent.
